Whether you are working through low back pain, anxiety, depression, or a major life change like divorce or aging, group yoga therapy is a safe place to let your body start its healing process. Life’s challenges often leave us in one of two categories: we can’t get moving again, or we can’t slow down. Whether you are stuck in place or can’t get off the sudden wild rollercoaster of your life right now, group yoga therapy will help you get back in touch with your true self. Each participant will move to their individual, pain-free edge, so you can practice in a group environment without needing to make the same shape as your neighbor.
It’s easy to get into a rut of sitting on the couch when life gets stressful and let those feelings weigh heavy on your bones.
When’s the last time you paid any attention to the way you walk and sit throughout the day? You might focus on that headache as a symptom but not on the root of why your body is reacting the way it is. Present-centered awareness of your movement patterns and body’s sensations can be the catalyst to start that shift. There’s no stigma here. From the outside, this group will look just like any other gentle yoga class – but inside you’ll be doing hard work on the physical, mental, emotional, and energetic levels that are hard to do without some support and guidance of a yoga therapist.
Maybe the thought of a sweaty room full of people in spandex seems anything but relaxing. Come in comfortable clothing. If you’re running late from the office and need to come in those clothes, that works, too. I’ve been there. The room will be lit so that I can see you, and the class will be taught so that everyone’s attention is on their individual experience. There is no competition in yoga therapy. It is a group setting but a very personal hour. Postures will be simple – you might push your limits – but nothing fancy. I will teach you how to find the right shape for your body. Unlike most modern drop-in yoga classes, the primary focus of the class will be reserved rest and meditation. You will learn how to practice the pause.
This ALL-LEVELS – from beginner to experienced – group will be a mix of gentle movement and meditation. Classes are limited to 6. This small-group format allows us to celebrate each other’s successes. Some sessions may end with sharing. Sharing your personal experience is always optional, but the act of sitting with others with similar struggles can be quite soothing. Participants will fill out an intake and goal-setting form before the first class so that I can choose postures, movements, and mindfulness techniques designed around your goals. Those goals could be stress reduction, physical and emotional pain relief, improved range of motion, more confidence and happiness, or getting back into a movement routine. It all starts with you and your body.
You want something to change; otherwise, you would not still be reading this. I want to help you make that change. You’re on the path to get to somewhere better. In the interim, I also want to meet you where you are TODAY, and the following week until you accomplish your goals. Just like cross-training, I will look at what you are already doing in your day-to-day life and help you feel gain confidence on your road to change. Driven, motivated people are great at looking ahead, but sometimes you need the assistance of a yoga therapist to improve what is right here and now.
You’ll explore safe joint warm-ups and ranges of motion for your body while still being given a chance to explore your edge or limits. The class will feature an extended rest, which is critical to your healing and mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation has been shown to reduce stress levels, improve your attention span, decrease negative feelings, and promote better sleep.
Groups require a minimum of a four-week commitment so that you can see and feel the change happen. You will probably notice some added strength and flexibility from the movements and yoga postures we do. But the biggest change will be in how you feel the 23 hours of the day that you’re not in yoga.
Imagine what an hour a week could do to change your life right now! If you aren’t sure if a group is for you or have concerns, I’m available for a free 15-minute phone consult. Share a few details including your phone number and we will be in touch sooner than you expect.
